Serverless vs Containers: The 2026 Calculus

Cold-start improvements and pricing changes have reshuffled the deck since 2022.

The serverless-vs-containers debate looked settled in 2022 and has reopened. Cold-start latencies have dropped, region availability has improved, and pricing has moved in serverless's favor for bursty workloads. The case for long-running containers is now narrower and stronger — concentrated on workloads with predictable utilization or specialized hardware needs.

The honest answer for most new applications: start serverless, instrument carefully, and move workloads to long-running compute one at a time when they outgrow it. The reverse migration is harder.
